Barley news Russia: In March 2006 Russia exported 114,000 t and imported 21,800 t of barley

Russia exported about 114,000 tonnes of barley in March 2006, down 4.3 % compared to the previous month and down 31.4 % versus March 2006.

According to AgriMarket Info’s report from April 20, the largest barley customers were the following countries:

- Saudi Arabia – 72,200 tonnes
- Tunisia – 27,400 tonnes
- Greece – 5,900 tonnes
- Kazakhstan – 4,000 tonnes.

The average barley export price was 131 USD per tonne in March. In general, Russia exported 1.5 mln tonnes of barley during July-March 2005/06.

At the same time in March Russia imported 21,800 tonnes of barley from Denmark (9,000 tonnes), Finland (6,000 tonnes), Kazakhstan (2,500 tonnes) and Sweden (2,400 tonnes).

Low barley harvest in 2005 – 16 million metric tonnes (17.2 million metric tonnes – in 2004) in combination with high export demand will result, according to analysts, in low supply and low carry over barley stocks in the end of 2005/06. The ending stocks are estimated at around 1 million metric tonnes, which is twice as low as the last season's number.

In total, from July to February, Russia exported 1.3 million metric tonnes of barley, which exceeded the Russian barley exports in the previous 2004/05 season (1.08 million metric tonnes).

A domestic price growth and aggravating difficulties with formation of export parcels due to dropping supplies, especially in southern regions, are resulting in a further decline in exports shipments.
